The Dorina Nowill Foundation for the Blind, and Brazilian agency Lew'Lara\TBWA, have created an ingenious product to help increase literacy for children who have sight impairments.  After c.1 year of development the toy/tool was presented to blind children aged 7-10, with result being lego-like toys that replace the traditional building blocks with braille characters.  The presentation was also used to produce a mini documentary showing the children's reactions to the bricks as well as their value.  Check it out here.
