A new baby wearable, the ‘Starling’ has been developed in response to the idea that the more you talk to a baby, the better set up they will be for life. Research indicates that the number of words children are exposed to prior to school years, is a huge predictor of their future IQ, vocabulary level and emotional well-being. The Starling measures interaction between adults and babies, tracking the the number of words spoken in its vicinity. It connects to parents iPhones over Bluetooth, providing metrics and other useful child-rearing information via its corresponding app. On the surface perhaps a device for techie parents but it’s benefits are also being harnessed to help low-income families close the language-based engagement gap.
