That thing that looks like a glass square is in fact a plastic-like material that channels specific wavelengths of sunlight towards photovoltaic solar cells on the edge of the panel. “Because the materials do not absorb or emit light in the visible spectrum, they look exceptionally transparent to the human eye,” say the researchers at Michingan State University who are working on this new technology.

Soon this may allow us to turn windows into power generators and build phones with self-charging screens.
