These three 16-year-olds from Ireland are the winners of the Google Science Fair - an annual teen science fair on steriods. To win, they found a bacteria which can naturally reduce the germination time of oats and barley by 50% and increase its yield by 74%.
The Diazotroph family of bacteria, which occur naturally in soil but don’t usually associate with barley and oats, greatly reduce the germination time of those crops. In showing this, the girls have found a potentially significant means of combating the growing global food challenge and reducing the amount of fertilizer needed for crop growth.
