That tiny thing beside the coin is the housing of a lensless image sensor that’s smaller than a pencil point and can take a photo.

If you’ve read Dave Eggers’ book The Circle (it’s great, you should), this tech will recall the dystopian future where there are virtually undetectable cameras everywhere connected to the internet, offering a 24/7 realtime capture of pretty much everything.

I’m at a conference this week with Daniel Domscheit-Berg, formerly of WikiLeaks, who just yesterday was appealing to the audience to do whatever we can to prevent this from happening, as he sees grave implications for the future of privacy and indeed democracy.
